Rotary Club of Palm Beach Awards $40,500 in Scholarships 6.28.12

Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.
– William Butler Yates

Welcome to the Annual Rotary Club of Palm Beach Scholarship Awards Luncheon. Special welcome to our Mayor, the Honorable Gail Coniglio and to Town Historian, Jim Ponce, both honorary members of this club. Special welcome to all our students, their parents and friends and to all our distinguished and generous foundation partners and donors. Special thanks to our members Gay Dedo (on the piano) and Bill Lewis (on guitar) and to vocalist Megan Clancy, a music student at the University of Florida.

Since our club’s founding 59 years ago, it has been our principal mission to grant scholarships to local students who excel in their schoolwork, give back to their community and demonstrate need for financial support. Over the past 15 years, this club with the support of our partner foundations has awarded more than $420,000 in scholarships. With the costs of college tuition rising faster than family incomes, and at a time when student loan debt already exceeds total credit card debt, the mission of this club in granting scholarships is more important than ever!

While budgets for education at the state and local level are being cut back, our board has again increased our grants from $34,500.00 last year to $40,500 this year, a 17.4% increase! This would not be possible without the generosity of our members, past members and partner foundations who have contributed to the Palm Beach Rotary Scholarship Fund over the years. It would also not be possible without the hard work of our club members who each year host and attend scholarship fundraisers and without the hard work of our Scholarship Committee, headed by Steve Presson.

In this video, Steve will introduce you to a random group of our 21 new and returning scholars and you’ll hear directly from them what it means to be the recipient of scholarship support from the Rotary Club of Palm Beach.

The club’s Scholarship Fund has grown over the years with the generous support of partner foundations and families whose contributions have funded named scholarships, including the new John G. Mitchell Memorial Scholarship, funded through the generosity of Mr. Ken Lewis, owner of John G. Mitchell Construction, the Alan B. Keiser Memorial Scholarship, the Everett H. Aspinwall Scholarship, the J.M. Rubin Foundation Scholarship, the Alexander and Jane Beal Foundation Scholarship, the Bronstien Family Trade School Scholarship, the John W. Henderson Scholarship, the John C. (Jack) Cassidy Memorial Scholarship, the Donna Mulholland – Quantum Foundation Scholarship, and the Bertha and Gerard Ascher Memorial Scholarship.

The Rotary Club of Palm Beach is the oldest club on the island and a leading Club in District 6930. The club was founded in 1953 and has counted among its members the most distinguished business and professional leaders in Palm Beach. The Club meets on Thursdays, 12:00 pm and on the 3rd Thursday of each month from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm for Rotary Happy Hour at the fabulous Breakers, Palm Beach.
